There were many first during this dog shoot over the weekend. It was the first time I met a Shar Pei in person. It was the first time I used my new Nikon D700 on a gig. It was the first time in a looong time I came away with less than 900 photos in one session (I go overboard), and that was due to this being the first time active shooting lasted around 30 minutes. That’s it! Just 30 minutes! Usually I average about 1.5 hours, and if you have a puppy, make it at least 2. But despite being a ribbon-winning show dog, Fergie is shy around strangers, so her mom wanted to keep the shooting time at a minimum. She told me upfront that she was going to be happy with whatever I come up with so not to worry – she plans to have me out again to do more anyway, she said. I love you, I said!

I’ll admit though that I was a bit thrown off by all this at first, and wished I had brought my hip flask with me. But the hyperventilating really picked up when I saw on the walls photos of Max the chocolate Shar Pei, Fergie’s predecessor, shot by none other than Amanda Jones. Amanda Jones, who is not so much a pet photographer as she is THE pet photographer. Her work of Max was all over the house. I was like OMG what! Am I doing! Here! Fergie’s mom only recently acquired her, but decided pretty soon afterwards that Fergie needed to be photographed like Max. So she called. (me!!) Max by Amanda Jones, Fergie by Fat Orange Cat Studio. !!! The woman is like a Patron of the Animal Arts. I lurve her. So much.

The building up of confidence is going to be an on-going thing, but I will say that I was really happy with the shots I was able to get in such a short period of time. So here is Fergie in her first photo shoot. She did beautifully (as did my new camera. Love love love)!

      Fergie!

I was debating whether or not to post the below photo.

      Fergie

Fergie’s mom made a mention of Fergie’s unmentionables, and namely how…pronounced…they are…I mean there’s no denying it so let’s just all acknowledge it right now, her hooha says HELLO HOW ARE YOU FINE WEATHER WE’RE HAVING! and as a kind of joke I suggested capturing her backside up close in the way of Georgia O’Keefe…I didn’t get quite so macro afterall, but I really like how in this shot she’s standing at the intersection of two spotlights, backside taking center stage. And I think it’s a little artful and was captured tastefully. Maybe.

She is a beauty. She is to a female what Max was to a male. You did a great capturing her personality. Look forward to seeing shoot 2.

WOW. Amanda Jones! WOW. that is So Awesome! those are big photo-shoes to fill but it looks like you are well on your way to creating a great portfolio! Fergie is the perfect name for this cutie…and omg her Hoo-Ha in all it’s glory…reminds me of my furball’s Hooha. I love that picture, and the ones following it. the sun-rays, the subtleties in her coat color, her trotting around, it all looks fab. :) Congrats! Can’t wait to see the second shoot pictures!

This is beautiful work…but what a beautiful subject! I look forward to future pix of Fergie…hoohah or whatever. The lighting and pix of the environment are just lovely.

Li – Love her! The first shot – perfect shar-pei chest shot. When I met my dog Spencer (he was eight weeks old), the first thing I loved about him was his chest and the way he kind of puffed it out like he was already the king of the hill – that first shot looks so familiar to me. And, the back legs and the tail. Hard to explain how that shot makes me feel. (k – just started crying). And – yeah – shar-pei butt. It surprises people at first. But follow it around on walks for 12 years or so and you’ll come to love it. :)

awww I love these! I totally laughed outloud about her hooha showing! look at all those smooshy wrinkles! beautiful lighting, love your angles!

wrinklefest — i love it! shar peis are an aloof breed that are not always very friendly. i know 1st hand :) you did an awesome job.

I totally love her. You did an AMAZING job… seriously, a half hour?!? Wow. I love the 4th shot and how you can see all her face wrinkles. :)

Absolutely beautiful! The lighting, the colorful backgrounds & of course, the Diva herself! Fergie is a gorgeous new addition to the home. Max would have been proud!

These photos are amazing ! Li was able to capture her sweetness in every shot. Fergie is just the epitome of the word “classy”. I can’ t wait to see more shots and am even more eager to visit her soon. Love them all.

Great photos! And the one you debated about….SO glad you posted it, i love it! I have a few from that angle of my own pooch that I love cause it’s so true to life, but alot of people may not get. Love the lighting in your photos, looking forward to seeing more!

You are so funny! Really great shots.

Haha, hilarious! Yes, she does have some pretty pronounced.. Um.. “Unmentionables”. I would have died after seeing Amanda Jones on the wall. DIED. But, wow, you did awesome! Love all those shots of her inside. And all that variety in such a short time. Awesome!
