The first pet shoot of the new year began with Logan’s third and final session of his Puppy Progress Package, which started back in April. His life began tenuously and he was barely the size of a shoe when I first met him.  Now, he’s a lean, mean, snow-eating machine. All 50 pounds of him. As with his second session in July, we began the day at home and then headed out to Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, right outside Boston. The Arboretum is not far from where we live, but we only think to visit during their lilac festival in the spring. We’re going to have to come out here more regularly. There was already several inches of fresh powder on the ground, with more falling lightly from the slate-colored sky. All around there was quiet whiteness, brittle branches, the occasional spray of red berries. It was beautiful; the perfect day and place to spend frolicking with a puppy.

But sniff! A puppy no longer!

I’m going to miss Logan. It has been so fun watching him grow from that fragile, nearly-euthanized little mite, to this handsome, healthy adult.  And it’s been a pleasure to document his first year for his parents. I might have to do a “seasons” package now to keep this going! So though this shoot might have been the last of the Puppy Package, it’s also the first of the Four Seasons Package – we have Spring, Summer and Fall to look forward to now! How ’bout it Logan?

I thought for blog posts going forward I would include some behind-the-scenes shots when Dan is accompanying me and holding the other camera, or self-portraits when it’s just me. Dan has absolutely no eye, so the simple technical accomplishments thrill me, like when his photograph is in focus. So it’s been a pleasant surprise that he’s actually improved his compositional skills too, and catching things that are interesting, like a line of snow collecting on a tree trunk:

And I thought I’d include some bloopers too:

Awwww… I just checked out all 3 shoots. What an adorable puppy!

What a fun shoot! I love the photo of the two little chipmunks watching him! Great eye. :)

The shot of him wearing the cowl over his head is to die for (though I do admittedly get perverse entertainment out of seeing pets in clothing.). What a cutie!

you know what i love about this shoot, other than the fact that he has a scarf on? that the contrast between his body & the snow is so blurred but his black little head is really sharp looking through the lens…what a wonderful effect! spectacular shoot li, i love it!

My little puppers is all grown up! I just wish his eyes had healed over more – poor little guy with all his skin issues. Could you touch them up? Hehe – an airbrushed pup! It is a shame we missed fall in the Arboretum – would have been a nice contrast with the brilliant colors and mostly-white pup. Maybe later this year…

I’m sorry that it’s over (for now!), but we have some gorgeous photos to remember his too-short time as a baby. You and Dan will just have to come to JP more often!

Love, love, love this session! The shots of him playing in the snow make me smile. And I like the idea of the behind-the-scenes shots… Go Dan!

What a gorgeous puppy dog… hard to believe someone would want to euthanize him… really nice images – thanks for sharing…

The reindeer hat is killing me! He is such a handsome boy now! Love the behind-the-scenes photos too. I am trying to share more behind my work as well. Love New Year’s resolutions… :)

I’m really glad I wasn’t taking a sip from my water glass while scrolling down to the second image (my screen and keyboard would have become very wet!) It’s HILARIOUS!!! And the one following is a great transition – he looks much more comfortable.
      Beautiful shots all around!

It’s my understanding that it’s difficult to shoot in the snow because all the blankets of white throw off the camera’s metering, but you did a pretty good job. The picture with the cowl over Logan’s head is my favorite too.

Fabulous imagery Li:> I love to see a dog at full romp out in nature and the snow enjoying life to the fullest!!! My Favorites are the first one the simplicity of it is divine. Second fav is the full out running with ears standing straight up..Logan got his dog grove goin on!!! Keep up the incredible imagery:>

Those are great shots! I love the pictures of Logan with the hat/cowl! So great that he’s happy and healthy and all grown!
