Pretty Things
Yesterday Sarah came up to Boston with an armful of flowers and a boat load of beautiful props so that we could photograph her new collection of “ready-to-wear” letterpress printed lovelies. With no help from Bingley, determined as he was to eat all the flowers or push every prop off the table ledge, it took us over three hours to style and photograph it all. But everything was so preeeetty! The calligraphy (hand-lettering in the bottom two photos by Grace Edmands Calligraphy), the stamps, the jars and glasses, the invitations. These are some behind the scenes with a couple of sneak peeks of her new collection, all of which will be revealed soon on her brand new site!
Teddy the orange tabby & Gidget the black cat
Teddy and Gidget the senior kitties are in their renovated digs! I have come to disturb their naps! This is their second shoot. The first shoot was over a year ago under gloomy conditions: the owners were holed up in small rental while their condo was getting fixed up, the temporary rug was kinda ugly, so said the owner, the lighting was terrible, and Gidget the black kitty told me to go do bad things to myself. But today she said purrrr, purrrr rrrrrr (excepting that last photo) so we are all friends again!
Cats cats cats are the best best best.
St. John USVI
I would like to abuse my typing powers and change on my website the title, description, keyword, tags, and all of the above to say “FAT ORANGE CAT STUDIO : ST. JOHN USVI PHOTOGRAPHER.“ Look at me, I will pull a fast one over Google’s eyes, wahaha. Forget the New England scene I tell you; I’m going tropicale. I will shoot all of your island weddings and all of your island pets! Iguanas, pelicans, goats, mongoose too…let’s do them all. Let’s do them now.
La. We’ve been home a week from vacationing in St. John with Anne & Jesse who we vacation with every year. I cashed in hotel points and all week long we ran around and lounged around half-dressed and half-drunk, glazed in a nice rub of sea salt and sunscreen lotion and now, now I feel like a wild animal trapped in this office, in this despicable sweater. Did you know I spent the whole time there with absolutely no mobile and very very spotty internet? Did I miss any of it? Are you crazy? When you’re on an island, your biggest questions in life are What Do I Eat (answer: conch fritters) and What Do I Drink (answer: painkiller). And the occasional, Shall I Swim Here Or Shall I Swim There (answer: both, but especially Trunk Bay).
I’ve been home but my mind is still traveling…still on island time…slow…aimlesss…purposeless…the way my body wants naturally to be. Life was good there…life…was…gooooood…
BEHIND THE SCENES

Calligraphy for Leslie of A Creative Mint
Sarah just popped these little gems in the mail to me, plus an envelope stuffed with vintage stamps from her own collection yeeeeeeah. They are letterpress printed business cards she made for Leslie Shewring of A Creative Mint. Her name is hand-lettered by me. Leslie is a designer and color inspirationalist – I had to make up that word for lack of a better one – and her blog is chock-full of exquisitely styled this-and-thats, all of which she photographs herself:

So many pretty, pretty things for your eyes to roam over without feeling fussy or overwhelming. It looks so fresh and so effortless, though I know it must take hours? days?? to get all the right props and to arrange and photograph them just so. Aah. I feel like I myself don’t have an eye for this. At all. With my calligraphy work I try to find good lighting, snap a few shots bare, sometimes with a book with an interesting cover, or with a cat that ambles into frame, and call it a day. But I’m going to try harder to take it to the next level, especially now that I have a small collection of vintage stamps, thanks to Sarah. Thank you thank you thank you.
Here is my first attempt…hee…
Leslie also contributes monthly to decor8 blog with her color-themed mood boards called Color Me Pretty. I love the latest for Spring. Check it out and be inspired!
