An MIT Engagement : Briar & Jason

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 { Engagements }

I recently shot my first engagement session on the campus of MIT, where my lovely subjects Briar and Jason both went to school. Not really knowing my way around the area (I am very Other Side of the River) I let them lead me to places of interest and significance to them. We met at the (infamous?) Stata Center, made our way through Building 7 and ended at the Charles River, having chance encounters with pretty, pretty light along the way.

I loved photographing this session, and I thank Briar and Jason for helping me to keep the shoot so easy, smart, and beautiful!

Just Because : Louise & Brian

Monday, December 13th, 2010 { Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Just Because }

This shoot features Louise and Brian, a young couple who just celebrated their 2nd anniversary. They are both originally from the South and have been in Boston for several years as Brian finishes up his PhD at MIT. The theme of the shoot is A Lazy Afternoon in the City. As Louise told me, “It’s pretty common for us, especially in the fall, to just grab a cup of coffee or cocoa and wander around the Back Bay, Beacon Hill…”

So on crispy and gray fall afternoon, we met in the historic neighborhood of Beacon Hill, traversed our way to the Public Garden, wandered through the Back Bay, stopping to window shop at AllSaints Spitalfields and admire their collection of vintage sewing machines — Louise’s family is in the textile business and she is an avid sewer. We stopped at the Old South Church where Louise sings in the choir, and finally warmed up with a glass of red wine at a Newbury Street bistro.

It turns out that Louise and I grew up in the same Atlanta suburb, and graduated from the same high school! We both agreed that despite the frigid cold, being transplanted from suburban sprawl to a tiny, walkable and beautiful city like Boston has not been a bad thing at all. Strolls from one neighborhood to the next, all steeped in history, is a weekly ritual and like me, they feel lucky to have been able to experience and appreciate Boston in this way.

A Stately Affair

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 { Weddings }

In October I photographed alongside Lisa Rigby at Katie & Doug’s stately wedding. We shot getting ready and first look photos at the Langham Hotel in Boston, had the ceremony at St. Mary’s Church in Charlestown, took the trolley over with the couple and bridal party to the Boston Public Garden for portraits, and ended at the State Room downtown. Since I played a supporting role in this event, here are some photos from the back. And a few from the side. And maybe one or two from the front. But mostly from the back. :)

Katie is getting ready to walk down the aisle with her mom. It occurred to me as we were in this church that this is the very first wedding I’ve photographed in a place of worship. Since I didn’t book this wedding, I’m still technically church-free! Quite an interesting trend, I think.

^ Band leader told everyone dancing to look up. This caught me off guard!

We end with…Dueling Photos from Across the Way!

This was right after mom gave her daughter away. Not sure if these can be called behind-the-scenes when we’re doing it right in the middle of the aisle.

Working with Lisa and her lovely clients is always a good time.

Cameron in front of the camera

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 { Dogs }

Cameron the sleek flat-coated retriever invited me to her home one crispy fall afternoon. After a quick shoot indoors, we caught some foliage outside at a nearby park and playground, and then Cameron drove me back to my neighborhood so that she could play unleashed with her fellow canines at Peter’s Park in the South End. Everyone wins!

Cameron’s style can be best described as “understated elegance” meets “touch of whimsy.”

Sundays with Morgan

Monday, December 6th, 2010 { Around Boston, Dogs, South End }

Morgan is mastiff puppy and a fellow South End-er of Boston. I met up with Morgan and some of her friends at her home (Sarah her BFF was over for a playdate) (Sarah is a dog) (haha) and after some shots indoors, we took a walk around the neighborhood and visited fellow puppies at the dog park, stopped for treats at favorite haunt Polka Dog Bakery, and browsed for accessories at Looc Boutique. Just a typical, lazy Sunday afternoon for Morgan. And can I say, Morgan knows everybody. Like, everybody. Being so big and so beautiful definitely has its perks.
